We do not see things as they are, we see things as we are. Have you ever witnessed an event with a friend and when you recounted what you had seen, realized that you each had entirely different perceptions about what had happened? This is because you are witnessing everything in life through your own personal filters or beliefs. We cannot see any more or less than our filters allow.
We all possess within our beings every attribute imaginable — love, hate, joy, sorrow, sickness, health, trust, betrayal...the list goes on and on. What another person chooses to pull from us or see in us is based upon the issues they are working on at the time. The same is true for us. We all act as mirrors for each other. The more important a person is in your life, the bigger the mirror he or she becomes. There are only two things that another person can reflect back to us. They reflect those things within ourselves for which we need to be grateful and those things that we need to forgive within ourselves.
Every person you encounter triggers certain pictures or emotions which you project onto him or her. When the emotions or images are reflecting warm, comfortable feelings they are mirroring something back to you that you like about yourself. These are the traits for which we should have gratitude. Every positive encounter reflects the beauty within you waiting to be expressed. These mirrors are usually the easiest to see.
When an encounter triggers feelings of anger, guilt, frustration, disappointment, annoyance, etc. this person is reflecting something you do not like about yourself or an area that needs healing. For these traits we need to find forgiveness for ourselves. People and relationships are our greatest healers.
Begin to take responsibility for yourself and ask “What is this person trying to teach me about myself? What can I learn from this person or situation and how can it help me heal?” Quit blaming and judging. Placing blame is merely your ego attempting to get out of doing the work necessary to heal and judgment is a way of feeling better about yourself by putting down another person. In order to keep another person down, some part of you has to be down there as well to hold them, thus encumbering your ability to soar.
For the next thirty days imagine that every person you encounter is here for the sole purpose of being your personal healing coach. Let everyone around you mirror for you the areas that need healing and the areas of your greatness. You are more powerful than you can even imagine and you are meant to be happy. Happiness is not found outside of yourself. It is not found in another person, place or thing. It resides in the heart of each and every one of us. When we're truly happy within ourselves, we're happy for everyone else also. Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all? YOU ARE!
